Community Mediation Services Division


The Minister, Minister of State, Permanent Secretary and staff of the Ministry of Social Development extend hearty congratulations to the Community Mediation Services Division (CMSD) for their success in the Prime Minister’s Innovating for Service Excellence Award Scheme.

The Honourable Dr. Amery Browne, Minister of Social Development and the Honourable Alicia Hospedales, Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Development were on hand to accept the Making a Difference to People – Social Inclusion Award for the Community Mediation Programme.

The Community Mediation Programme provides an alternative to the Court process in settling disputes, engages in community outreach and conducts educational and training courses to empower citizens and transform their lives. Walk-in and referred clients may also access free counseling at the five (5) mediation centres in Couva, Cunupia, Port of Spain and Point Fortin. Director (CMSD) Beverly Harry-Emmanuel and are working toward the establishment of 15 additional mediation centres across the country.

"After Mitch we had Lenny, then Katrina, and eventually Michelle," recalls Oscar Alcántara, a community leader in La Masica, a municipality in Honduras’ Atlantida department.

Spotlight On

I’m currently a Board Member with the Central Board. Well, I was brought on to the Board because of my work with the NGO (Living Waters Community), and I am able to tell a person who comes into Living Waters looking for assistance that they can go to the Social Welfare Office because they have resources to assist them.
